  • Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Encanto” tells the tale of an extraordinary family, the Madrigals, who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia, in a magical house, in a vibrant town, in a wondrous, charmed place called an Encanto. The magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift from super strength to the power to heal-every child except one, Mirabel (voice of Stephanie Beatriz). But when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is in danger, Mirabel decides that she, the only ordinary Madrigal, might just be her exceptional family’s last hope.

This song is a lot like “Let it Go”: both songs about characters shedding away people’s expectations, and letting their true selves shine.

It is but I think what makes this so beautiful whereas Let It Go is kind of sad is that Isabela is finally connecting with her sister by being true to herself, experiencing joy and acceptance in that moment, rather than running away and isolating herself. Let It Go is a stop on Elsa's journey toward healing, What Else Can I Do is an arrival.

…13If I close the sky so there is no rain, or if I command the locust to devour the land, or if I send a plague among My people, 14and if My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land. 15Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place.…
From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”30As Jesus spoke these things, many believed in Him. 31So He said to the Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, you are truly My disciples. 32Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”…6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. 7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. 8 All these are the beginning of sorrows 2You must keep My Sabbaths and have reverence for My sanctuary. I am the LORD. 3If you follow My statutes and carefully keep My commandments, 4I will give you rains in their season, and the land will yield its produce, and the trees of the field will bear their fruit …3Hear, O Israel, and be careful to observe them, so that you may prosper and multiply greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the God of your fathers, has promised you. 4Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is One. 5And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength 28Now one of the scribes had come up and heard their debate. Noticing how well Jesus had answered them, he asked Him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?” 29 Jesus replied, “This is the most important: ‘Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One. 30Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’……3All the nations have drunk the wine of the passion of her immorality. The kings of the earth were immoral with her, and the merchants of the earth have grown wealthy from the extravagance of her luxury.” 4Then I heard another voice from heaven say: “Come out of her, My people, so that you will not share in her sins or contract any of her plagues. 5For her sins are piled up to heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities.…36No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 37 As it was in the days of Noah, so will it be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark.…

This is not just a Isabella growth song. But it also is Mirabel growing. Mirabel realizes that there's more to her sister than she saw. She saw someone spoiled and thinking she was perfect, when in reality the perfect and beautiful was just a mask, like her eldest sister's strong and tough.
I see both sister's sides too because my mom's expectations forced me to perfect and I was always never as good as my siblings.

What I like about Isabela’s “character development” in this song is that she started creating plants and flowers that are not perceived as perfect (roses), but are VERY MUCH associated with her culture. Succulents, cactii, carnivorous plants, plants that extracts a lot of colored pollen (i can imagine that scene being hell for allergic people). All of those plants are very much cultural and are very beautiful nonetheless.

3:16 'For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

3:17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

3:18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.

3:19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.

3:20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.

3:21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.'

14:6 Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

14:7 If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.'

Being someone that has social anxiety and is working on dealing with it, I find this song to be relatable in a way. You become so focused on how others view you that you’re so nervous to be yourself. You may even go so far as to be someone you’re not.

This song tells people that it’s okay to just be however and whoever you wanna be and that it’ll be beautiful in your way. Who cares if other people don’t like it? You’re happy and those who truly care about you will accept you.

Thank you Lin & Disney for this song ❤️

This song really show’s Mirabel’s strength-her supportive, loving nature. Here’s yet another powerful family member unleashing her magic, and there’s not a bit of resentfulness in Mirabel. She’s entirely happy to jump in and enjoy the magic plants and see her sister happy. She’s so upbeat, you’d think *she* was the one making magic.

1:27 At around here, this song starts hitting me in the feels. Isabella turns to her sister and puts her woes out there for the first time. And Mirabel starts to see that her sister isn't an annoying perfect child with a beautiful power and perfect life. And as much as they start out resenting each other, they don't hesitate to have a heart to heart, and eventually hug. That's what siblings are for!!

she can but all these emotions and thoughts of her needing to be perfect suppressed her potential to grow more than pretty flowers. I think she tried it however she can't because her full power is not yet realized. it is pretty evident from her line "i just made something unexpected" because she thought she can't create things like those outside her comfort zone, it is new for her, a first time experience.

I think the greatest thing here is the double meaning... "what else can I do" can be Isabela realizing that she can do more than just beautiful, perfect flowers and her desire to explore that, but you can also interpret it as her crying out "what else can I do" to her family because she feels as if she can't reach the bar of perfection her abuela and society has set for her. That might be a stretch but that's just something I thought of :) have a great 2022 everyone!!

    *Lyrics:*
    I just made something unexpected
    Something sharp, something new
    It's not symmetrical or perfect
But it's beautiful and it's mine
    What else can I do?
Bring it in, bring it in
Good talk, bring it in, bring it in (what else can I do?)
Let's walk, bring it in, bring it in
Free hugs, bring it in, bring it in
I grow rows and rows of roses
Flor de mayo, by the mile
    I make perfect, practiced poses
So much hides behind my smile
What could I do if I just grew what I was feelin' in the moment?
(Do you know where you're going? Whoa)
What could I do if I just knew it didn't need to be perfect?
It just needed to be? And they'd let me be?
    A hurricane of jacarandas
Strangling figs (big), hanging vines (this is fine)
Palma de cera fills the air as I climb
    And I push through
    What else can I do?
Can I deliver us a river of sundew?
Careful, it's carnivorous, a little just won't do
I wanna feel the shiver of something new
I'm so sick of pretty, I want something true, don't you?
You just seem like your life's been a dream (whoa)
Since the moment you opened your eyes
(How far do these roots go down?)
All I know are the blossoms you grow (whoa)
But it's awesome to see how you rise
    How far can I rise?
Through the roof, to the skies
    Let's go
    A hurricane of jacarandas (woo)
Strangling figs (go), hanging vines (grow)
Palma de cera fills the air as I climb
    And I push through
    What else, what else?
What can you do when you are deeply, madly, truly in the moment?
    (Seize the moment, keep goin')
What can you do when you know who you wanna be is imperfect?
    But I'll still be okay
Hey, everybody clear the way, woo
I'm comin' through with tabebuia (she's comin' through with that boo-yeah)
Making waves (making waves), changing minds (you've changed mine)
The way is clearer 'cause you're here, and well
I owe this all to you
    What else can I do?
(Show 'em what you can do)
    What else can I do?
    (There's nothing you can't do)
    What else can I do?

A small detail I noticed: at 2:11, when Isabela first stains her dress, she seems anxious because she is still used to being the perfect daughter, but when she looks to Mirabel, she gives Isabela a smile to encourage her, and Isabela becomes happier and more confident in exploring this new side to herself. It really shows growth for the both of them especially since their earlier relationship was displayed as more antagonistic, and it's really lovely to see! :D

It truly looks as if this is the most fun Isabella's had in years. No expectations of perfection or tidyness, no socially accepted behaviour for a proper lady, just kicking up the colourful dust for giggles, dancing like no one's watching, and making a mess because who cares, it can be cleaned up later, we're gonna have fun now! 🥳🥳🥳

@Winter Nelson the vocals, the meaning, the importance to the story, everything about dos oruguitas is beautiful- making it the best (in my opinion) song from the movie. It is a great representation of the many civil wars that Columbia has endured and Sebastián Yatra sings it beautifully. Not to mention the vocals in the last chorus are gorgeous. Maybe you don’t have the ability to recognize this song for what it’s worth, but I encourage you to give it another listen- especially the full version (not the cut version that’s in the movie) :))

@Dion very much so, I never claimed to be the one in the right, but I feel that Disney was known for something that it isn't now anymore. So to call it the best Disney movie feels inaccurate. Call it the best movie published nowadays etc. But Disney? Disney the company back then died long ago. It's just a cash-grabber company nowadays and while this movie may be good, I refuse, based on nostalgia and personal view, to call this a masterpiece from Disney. Disney succumbed to the pretentious social media since Frozen was released, the most cringe boring movie I've ever seen to this day. Music was bomb, but the story lacked so much for me. It felt so cringe, like they wanted to make fun of themselves...it felt like a youtuber that cringes at their old content and acts like they're better now...like don't do that...
